‘Nervous’ chef is banned and fined after cocaine swoop

September 13, 2023

A chef who was returning from work was caught driving under the influence of drugs.

Christopher Malley was disqualified from driving for one year when he appeared at Letterkenny District Court.

Sergeant Vincent Muldoon told the court that he was carrying out a checkpoint on July 1, 2020 at Gortnavern, Kerrykeel, when he stopped a vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, Malley, appeared ‘very nervous’, Sergeant Muldoon told the court.

Malley, a 39-year-old of Meetinghouse Street, Stranorlar, tested positive for the presence of cocaine in his system.

Sergeant Muldoon said Malley was ‘co-operative’. The detection occurred at 12.07am and Malley told Gardai that he was a chef who was going home from work.

Malley’s solicitor said his client tendered the earliest possible plea and the incident occurred after the ‘sad passing of a close family member’.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham fined Malley €100, allowing six months to pay, and disqualified him from driving for one year.
