A 17-year-old boy has died following a crash in County Monaghan overnight.

The single-vehicle incident happened at Carrickaderry, Clontibret, at around 1.30am.

The boy, who was driving the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been removed to the mortuary at Monaghan General Hospital, where a post mortem will take place.

The scene on the old N2 at Carrickaderry is currently closed pending a technical examination and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí in Monaghan are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

In particular, they are asking road users who were travelling in the Clontibret area this morning between 1am and 1.45am and who may have camera footage to make it available to them.
