A proposal has been made to introduce more water refill stations in parks and towns throughout Donegal to benefit the environment.
Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh has called on Donegal County Council to liaise with Uisce Eireann to increase the number of water stations countywide following the successful introduction of one at Bernard McGlinchey Town Park last month.
Cllr Kavanagh told this week’s Letterkenny-Milford MD meeting that the stations would help reduce the use of single use plastic bottles, of which an estimated 80% go to landfill. It would also help people save money, he said.
Cllr Kavanagh said he believed that the provision of more drinking water fountains nationwide would be a “very popular project for the council to get involved in”.
“The one in the Town Park is a good start, it’s a project that we should be continuing with,” Cllr Kavanagh told the council on Tuesday.
Donegal County Council has agreed to liaise with Uisce Éireann on the matter.
