Disappointment as visit of largest-ever cruise ship to Killybegs cancelled

Bad weather has forced the cancellation of the visit of what would have been the largest ever cruise ship to Killybegs.

The 326m cruise liner, the Norwegian Getaway, was due to dock in the port today.

The ship has a massive 4,819 passengers, with a guest capacity of 3,963.

The 145,600-tonne ship would have topped all records at Killybegs’ deep water port. The record was previously broken on the 16th of May this year by the 294 metre long Norwegian Star.

It’s currently on a 16-day round-trip of Northern Europe which departed from Southampton on 15th September.

The colourful Norwegian Getaway was due to be the third-last cruise to visit Killybegs during this bumper 2023 season.

Twenty-eight cruises bringing an estimated 50,000 crew and passengers were on the itinerary this year.

The Norwegian Star is still due back in Killybegs on Friday.
