One of Ireland’s best-ever hurlers has been arrested in a fraud and forgery probe.
RTE is reporting that former Kilkenny hurler DJ Carey appeared in court in Dublin charged with multiple fraud and forgery offences.
The 52-year-old was arrested by appointment in Dublin this morning and brought to court by gardaí from Waterford.
He is accused of inducing people to pay him money by fraudulently claiming to have cancer and that he needed the money to obtain treatment in 2022.
The five-time All-Ireland winner faces 21 charges under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act.
He appeared before Judge John O’Leary at Blanchardstown District Court.
He was handed the book of evidence and sent forward for trial at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
He was remanded on bail to appear again at the next sitting of the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 3 November.
He was ordered not to contact any witnesses or potential witnesses and to inform the gardaí if travelling abroad or to the UK for work.
The judge said Mr Carey has no income whatsoever and granted him free legal aid after a statement of means was handed in to the court.
