A driver was halted in the Buncrana area last night after overtaking gardaí and breaking a red light.
The incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday morning when members of the Buncrana Roads Policing Unit were on patrol in an unmarked car.
A motorist had overtaken the unmarked car in an area where roadworks were taking place. The car in question then ignored a red light.
Gardaí immediately pulled the car over and conducted the usual checks. However, the insurance check resulted in another ‘red light’, revealing that the driver was not insured to drive the car.
As a result, the car was seized and the driver will now face prosecution.
“Never take unnecessary risks on the roads,” said a garda spokesperson.
Irish Road Safety week takes place from Monday 2 October to Sunday 8 October. Awareness activities include gardaí calling to many playschools and creches in Donegal to explain the basics of road safety to kids.
