The number of Ukrainian people seeking social protection in Donegal has risen to over 7,000, new CSO figures show.

The CSO reports that, as of 9th October, there were 7,006 refugees from Ukraine living across Donegal’s seven municipal districts.

The Donegal MD has the highest number of arrivals, with 2,052 refugees accounting for 7.4% of the local population.

The number of Ukrainian people in Donegal has risen by over 1,000 since June.

The regional breakdown is as follows:

  • Glenties – 1,386
  • Milford – 801
  • Carndonagh – 733
  • Buncrana – 362
  • Donegal – 2,052
  • Letterkenny – 1,265
  • Lifford-Stranorlar – 407

Over 900 children are enrolled in Donegal primary schools, with 607 in post-primary education.

Nationally, 96,338 people from Ukraine have arrived in Ireland up to 8th October 2023, of which over 800 arrived in the previous seven days.

Laura Carter, Statistician for the CSO, said that Kenmare in Co. Kerry had the highest number of associated arrivals from Ukraine at 2,590.

“Our analysis also shows that the rate per 100 of the population ranges across all LEAs in the country from 0.20% to 11.11%. The LEA with the highest rate was Ennistimon in Co. Clare,” Carter said.
