Letterkenny Aontu rep proposes “flexi hour” solution to traffic chaos

Letterkenny Aontu rep Mary T. Sweeney says that local schools should introduce a “flexi hour” in the mornings, in order to help the traffic chaos in the town.

It’s after works were completed to add traffic lights at the Polestar Roundabout in the last few weeks, with many commuters complaining of increased tailbacks throughout the town as a result.

Mary T. Sweeney has proposed that some schools in the Letterkenny could follow the example of others in the county, by opening their doors for students at 8am and allowing them in to wait for classes to start – so traffic entering the town is more spread out.

“Consider our schools starting earlier, or just open all schools to introduce a subsidised 8am breakfast club. This model is available in Donegal where students get dropped off from 8am and can get tea and toast before school starts. It works so let’s try it”, she said.

Continuing, Sweeney also stated that “I firmly believe in the interim, while awaiting this new bridge from the Dry Arch to Ballyraine Road, we need a smaller relief bridge over the River Swilly in the vicinity of the Leck Road.”

“While we are waiting on this new bridge we need a current traffic flow study, to identify where the traffic is moving to and from and what direction needs the bridge most. I am informed the only current traffic flow study we have is now outdated and a new traffic study needs to be commisioned ASAP.”
