A driver who was caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel was subsequently arrested for drug driving.

Buncrana Roads Policing Unit were on patrol yesterday when they detected a driver holding a mobile phone while driving.

The driver then failed the roadside oral fluid preliminary drug test, testing positive for opiates and was arrested.

Buncrana Roads Policing Unit were joined by RSA officers at several checkpoints yesterday as part of a joint operation to ensure road safety.

During the operation, one driver was taken off the road for driving with a badly worn/defective tyre. The driver was fined and prohibited from further travel until the defect was remedied.

Another driver, of a tractor and trailer, was also issued with a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice for holding a mobile phone while driving.

“Please help save lives on the roads by always making responsible decisions,” said a garda spokesperson.
