Gardaí have launched extra checkpoints across the country today ahead of the busy Bank Holiday weekend.
To date this year, 155 people have lost their lives on Irish roads.
An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to all road users, for whatever reason you will be using the roads this weekend, whatever your mode of transport may be, to stay safe on the roads this weekend.
A five day operation will target lifesaver offences such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding, non-seatbelt wearing and using a mobile phone while driving.
To date in 2023 An Garda Síochána has issued over 120,000 speeding fines, around 4,000 fines for non-wearing of seatbelts and approximately 13,000 fines for holding a mobile phone.
Over 6,000 drivers have been arrested on suspicion of drink/ drug driving).
Drug Driving detections account for over 35% of all driving while intoxicated detections to date in 2023.
