A service driver from Donegal has been allowed to keep his licence after being caught driving at 166km/h.
Aidan Harkin, a 31-year-old of Hill View, Cranford, was spared a disqualification by Judge Ciaran Liddy when he appeared before Letterkenny District Court.
Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that Gardai were operating a speed check at Castlegay, Kilmacrennan at 9.28pm on July 16, 2023.
A vehicle being driven by Harkin was detected travelling at 166km/h on the road which is governed by a 100km/h speed limit.
The court heard that road conditions were dry and visibility was good on the night in question.
Sergeant Collins said there were ‘no other extenuating circumstances’ and said Harkin was cooperative on the night.
Harkin had a charge of dangerous driving reduced to one of careless driving.
His solicitor, Mr Frank Dorrian, said his client makes his living as a service driver ‘and his licence is therefore very precious to him’.
Judge Liddy fined Harkin €150 for careless driving, allowing three months to pay.
