Figures released by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation today have shown a notable decrease in overcrowding numbers at Letterkenny University Hospital in October.
It’s after an emergency was declared at the hospital by GPs and consultants, due to the lack of available beds.
A HSE Specialist Unit was deployed at LUH last week in an attempt to help the ongoing crisis
While overcrowding figures are still high, with 349 patients left without a bed at LUH in October – that figure is down almost 40% on last month where 580 patients were left on trollies.
Nationwide there were over 10,500 patients left without a bed in hospitals during October according to the INMO.
Pressure has been intensifying on Health Minister Stephen Donnelly in recent months to visit the hospital and provide further funding and supports, with high levels of staff vacancies and stressed out staff reaching breaking point at LUH.
