A new Irish language bursary is to be launched today in honour of Donegal supergroup Clannad.

The launch, hosted by Údarás na Gaeltachta, will thank the group for the emphasis they have placed on their native language and culture throughout their career.

The new bursary in their honour will be awarded to a Gaeltacht artist and will be launched in Leo’s Tavern later today.

Údarás na Gaeltachta is awarding the bursary worth €30,000 (€10,000 a year over 3 years) to assist a Gaeltacht artist in developing new work through the medium of Irish.

The bursary is also to celebrate the impact Clannad have had on the awareness of the Irish language at home and abroad

Clannad were founded by Pádraig and Noel Ó Dúgáin with Pól, Ciarán and Máire Uí Bhraonáin in 1970 and have achieved worldwide renown since, winning numerous awards, including the Ivor Novello Award, a Grammy Award and a BAFTA.

Údarás na Gaeltachta Chief Executive, Tomás Ó Síocháin, said “Clannad brought the music, the songs and the Irish language to a global audience and many people around the world have been inspired to learn Irish as a result of the group’s commitment to their language and culture.

“They also gave their own Gaeltacht community a further reason to take pride in their own language and heritage. We all share that pride. Údarás na Gaeltachta are delighted to have the opportunity to express our gratitude to them today, and to support another Gaeltacht artist with this new bursary.”

Background to the bursary

The bursary entails a single grant worth €30,000 – €10,000 a year over 3 years. The scheme is aimed at Gaeltacht artists who are practicing through the medium of Irish in any medium or field of the arts, to support them in developing new work. The bursary will support living costs and the costs associated with the development of a specific project.

The bursary may be used for the purpose of:

• having another artist as a mentor for a period of time

• hire or purchase of necessary equipment

• attending an artists’ residency.

Ealaín na Gaeltachta will administer the scheme on behalf of Údarás na Gaeltachta.

The deadline for entries is 31 January – More information can be found anseo.

Aitheantas le tabhairt do Chlannad as an ardán a thugann siad don Ghaeilge –

sparánacht nua d’ealaíontóir Gaeltachta le bronnadh ina n-onóir

I dTeach Leo inniu a reáchtálfaidh Údarás na Gaeltachta ócáid in ómós don bhanna ceoil iomráiteach as Gaeltacht Thír Chonaill, Clannad, ag glacadh buíochais leis an ngrúpa as an mbéim a leag siad ar an teanga, ar chultúr agus ar dhúchas na Gaeltachta thar na mblianta

Ó bhunaigh Pádraig agus Noel Ó Dúgáin agus Pól, Ciarán agus Máire Uí Bhraonáin an banna ceoil Clannad i 1970, tá cliú agus cáil bainte amach acu ar fud an domhain agus gradaim go leor bainte amach acu, dámhachtain Grammy, BAFTA, agus Ivor Novello ina measc.

Mar chomhartha ómóis don ghrúpa agus le ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar an tionchar a bhí acu ar chúrsaí Gaeilge, tá Údarás na Gaeltachta ag bronnadh sparánacht ar fiú €30,000 (€10,000 sa bhliain thar 3 bliana), le cuidiú le healaíontóir Gaeltachta forbairt a dhéanamh ar shaothar úr trí mheán na Gaeilge.

Dúirt Príomhfheidhmeannach Údarás na Gaeltachta, Tomás Ó Síocháin “Thug Clannad an ceol, na hamhráin agus an Ghaeilge chuig ardáin dhomhanda agus is iomaí duine ar fud na cruinne a spreagadh agus a d’fhoghlaim Gaeilge dá bharr tiomantais an ghrúpa don teanga agus don chultúr trí chéile. Ní amháin sin, ach spreag siad mórtas i bpobal na Gaeltachta ina dteanga agus a n-oidhreacht féin. Is údar bróid dúinn ar fad iad. Tá lúcháir orainn go bhfuil an deis againn an bród agus an buíochas sin a léiriú inniu, agus tacaíocht a thabhairt d’ealaíontóir Gaeltachta eile tríd an sparánacht atá á fhógairt againn.”

Nótaí

Deontas amháin atá i gceist ar fiú €30,000 é – €10,000 sa bhliain thar 3 bliana. Tá an scéim dírithe ar ealaíontóirí Gaeltachta atá ag cleachtadh trí mheán na Gaeilge in aon mheán nó réimse ealaíona, chun tacú leo forbairt a dhéanamh ar shaothar úr. Tacóidh an sparánacht le costais mhaireachtála agus i dtreo costais saothar faoi leith a fhorbairt.

D’fhéadfadh an sparánacht tacú le ealaíontóir:

  • ealaíontóir eile a bheith mar mheantóir agat ar feadh tréimhse
  • trealamh riachtanach a thógáil ar cíos nó a cheannach
  • freastal ar thréimhse chónaitheach.

Is iad Ealaín na Gaeltachta a bheas ag reáchtáil na scéime thar ceann Údarás na Gaeltachta.

Is é an 31 Eanáir an spriocdháta d’iontrálacha – tuilleadh eolais faoin scéim le fáil anseo.
