Could you help older people locally with small DIY jobs?

Age Action is looking for volunteers for its Care and Repair service in Donegal.

Care and Repair carries out small DIY jobs free of charge, for older people to help them maintain their homes and their independence.

Care and Repair does jobs that might be more difficult to complete as we get older but not big enough to call in a tradesperson.

As we grow older basic household tasks can become very difficult to manage. Even something as simple as changing a light bulb can become a major problem for an older person who is not in a position to climb on a chair to change the bulb. Other household tasks such as trimming hedges, installing smoke alarms, changing locks, painting and moving furniture cause similar difficulties.

For those older people who may not have anyone locally they can call on, these tasks can become a source of great frustration.

Age Action are looking for volunteers to help to roll out the service in these areas in Donegal:

Letterkenny, Stranorlar, Raphoe, Convoy, Lifford, Ballybofey and Drumkeen.

Common jobs might include: painting a wall, moving some furniture or hanging up a painting.

You don’t need to have a high level of DIY skill, just some basic DIY skills, access to a basic toolkit and transport, and a willingness to help! Training and ongoing support will be provided by Age Action.

Volunteers are sent out in pairs to complete jobs, so maybe you can bring the benefits of volunteering to your friends, neighbours, family or colleagues by asking them to volunteer with you!

For more information and to get the application forms to volunteer, please email us on volunteering@ageaction.ie or call us on 0818 911 109.
