Errigal College has been announced as the winner of the 2023 Euroscola competition for the Midlands North West constituency.

The school has earned the prestigious opportunity to send 24 students and 2 teachers to represent Ireland at Euroscola in Strasbourg in March 2024, where they will step into the shoes of a Member of the European Parliament for a day.

The Euroscola competition, launched by the European Parliament Liaison Office in Ireland in early September, called on students to create a 1 minute video clip addressing the theme “European Elections: Democracy in Action.”

The challenge was to propose innovative ideas to increase voter turnout among young people in the European Elections scheduled for June 2024.

Errigal College’s students rose to the occasion, dedicating themselves to the creation of a compelling video entry that not only met but exceeded the competition’s criteria. Their winning entry can be viewed by clicking here.

Mr. Danny McFadden, Principal of Errigal College, expressed his pride and excitement, saying, “This victory is a testament to the dedication and creativity of our students and staff. Congratulations to Mr. Evan Gorrell on leading out the European Parliament Ambassador School programme in our school and also to Ms. Caitriona Hasson who supported the group throughout the process of this competition. It is a tremendous honour for our school to represent the Midlands North West constituency, and we are looking forward to the enriching experience it will provide for our students.”

Mr. Evan Gorrell, Business Teacher at Errigal College, added, “The EPAS programme and the Euroscola competition provided an excellent platform for our students to engage with the democratic process and share their ideas on increasing voter turnout. Winning this competition is a validation of their hard work and commitment. It truly was a team effort and a massive thank you must go to the TY students and to Ms. Hasson for her unwavering support”

Prospective students and their families can hear more about this programme and the other fantastic initiatives taking place in Errigal College at the school’s Open Night on Thursday, November 23rd.The Open Night is an excellent opportunity for parents and students to explore what the school has to offer and get a glimpse of Errigal’s unique and vibrant school community.
