Met Éireann has issued a low-temperature warning for the country tonight and Friday as overnight temperatures dip further.
The cold snap has brought very cold temperatures across the country, with temperatures expected to fall below -3 degrees in many areas.
Tonight (Thursday) will see lows of -2C and “scattered wintry showers will push in later with a dusting of snow possible over higher ground.”
“Tonight will be very cold with widespread sharp to severe frost and icy stretches,” Met Eireann said.
A status yellow warning is in place from 5pm this evening until 12noon on Friday.
“Frost and ice developing will cause hazardous travelling conditions,” forecasters said for the weekend.
A second alert takes effect on Friday evening from 5pm until 12noon Saturday.
“Very cold with widespread frost and icy conditions. Fog and freezing fog too,” is the outlook for Friday night.
Friday is the first day of the meteorological winter and is expected to be very cold with highs of 3 to 5 degrees.
The outlook for Friday is: “Any frost, ice, and mist or fog will gradually clear tomorrow morning giving way to a mostly dry day with sunny spells mixed with scattered wintry showers. A temporary dusting of snow possible locally.”
