Eir-Sat1 became Ireland’s first satellite to be launched into space earlier this week.
The satellite was designed by students at UCD, and launched in California.
Donegal ended up playing a small role in confirming the operation of the satellite – with a location beacon in the county being one of several worldwide that picked up its signal and making contact, confirming the success of the launch.
Eir-Sat1 was funded in part by the European Space Agency, with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar saying the work done by the satellite would “break new frontiers for space research & education” in Ireland.
