Delight as Royal student Jennifer wins place at Oxford University

Getting accepted into college is always a big deal for any student when you have your heart set on a certain certain course and a certain destination.

But when you set your heart on one of the most prestigious colleges in the world then it’s not always guaranteed.

And that’s why Burnfoot native and former Head Girl of The Royal and Prior Comprehensive School, Jennifer Holly, is a happy young woman.

Jennifer has recently taken up a place at Magdalen College at Oxford University to study Classics and English.

She says she chose these subjects because “they allow for interdisciplinary study of literature, language, history, and even politics”.

Jennifer said Magdalen College was her top choice because of “the beautiful grounds, great community and tutors, and notable Irish connections with Oscar Wilde being a former student!”

The former Royal student has always had a keen interest in Classics, but after completing a summer course in Latin, she fell in love with the subject.

English has piqued Jennifer’s interest since her primary school days, and fits perfectly with Classics in the study of classical reception.

Jennifer describes the application process for Oxford as “undoubtedly challenging, but enriching and educational, on both an academic and personal level.”

But, she says her time at The Royal and Prior afforded her opportunities that have been “of the utmost value during the application process and at my time so far at Oxford.”

Principal of The Royal and Prior Dr Howard Welch said all at the school are just so happy for Jennifer.

He said “The whole school community is delighted to see Jennifer secure her place at Oxford; we wish her all the very best in her studies and look forward with interest to see where her talents next take her.

“The school has a clear intent to ensure all students are given all the encouragement and support needed for them to reach their potential and enable them to proceed to college, an apprenticeship or university.”
