Substantial grants have been announced for two major sports facilities in Donegal.

The Finn Harps Donegal Community Stadium has been allocated an extra €693,550. This is in addition to a previous funding allocation of over €3.9 million, bringing the total received to date to over €4.6 million.

The Letterkenny Regional Sports-Activity Hub project led by ATU Donegal and Donegal County Council has been granted €422,739 for 2023. This is in addition to a previous funding allocation of over €326,000, bringing the total to €749,000.

The top-up funding was announced today by Catherine Martin T.D., Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, and Thomas Byrne T.D., Minister of State for Sport and Physical Education.

Joe McHugh, TD for Donegal said: “I am delighted this morning to see Top-Up Grant Allocations to existing projects under the Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF)”

This top-up process is as a result of challenges affecting these projects, such as construction inflation.

A new round of Large-Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund will open in early 2024.

Joe McHugh, “This is really positive news as these sporting facilities are an important asset to the County, and the health, fitness and well-being benefits associated with the Finn Harps and Letterkenny facilities are so important in our communities, for people of all ages.

“I would like to acknowledge the hard work of both groups as they strive for two state-of-the-art centres of excellence,” he concluded.

Michael White, Chairperson, Green Party Donegal said: “Sport is a huge part of people’s lives in Donegal and it’s brilliant to see that Minister Martin has allocated record funding to the county. This is a big shot in the arm for both Finn Harps and Letterkenny.”
