A Donegal man this week launched a new podcast on the last Irishman in American Football.

Lochlainn Harte, from Letterkenny, produced the extraordinary journey into the heart of American football with “Corny – The Last Irishman in the NFL.”

This groundbreaking podcast recounts the inspiring story of Neil O’Donoghue, AKA Corny: the last Irishman to play in the NFL.

In the 1970s, Neil O’Donoghue made history in the NFL, rubbing shoulders with legends such as OJ Simpson, Dan Dierdorf, and coaching icon Jim Hanifan, a key figure in two Super Bowl victories. Neil’s journey was marked by memorable moments, including a historic game-winning kick that secured the Buccaneers’ first-ever championship in 1979. He also played with the Buffalo Bills and the St. Louis Cardinals, not to mention being an American All-star kicker.

Hailing from Clondalkin, Dublin, Neil played Gaelic football with the Clondalkin Round Towers GAA club and some of Dublin’s biggest soccer teams. He initially turned down the first-ever soccer scholarship to the USA but pivoted to American football after a twist of fate. Rising through the ranks, Neil faced the pressures of the NFL, witnessing teammates succumb to tragic ends, experiencing the ruthless nature of team selections, and enduring the highs and lows of fan loyalty.

This is the first independent production of Lochlainn Harte, who is behind the sound design of chart-topping podcasts such as “Inside the Crime” (Season 1&2), “As I Remember it: Bertie Ahern and the Good Friday Agreement”, “Let Me Explain” (Best New Podcast of the Year 2023) and “Unusual Suspects” to name a but a few.

Don’t miss out on this celebration of resilience, triumph, and the indelible mark made by the last Irishman in the NFL.
