If you were woken by a loud rumble on Sunday morning last, that’s because Donegal was rocked by a minor earthquake!

The 1.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Fanad peninsula on Sunday 10th December at 6.48am.

Residents close to Kerrykeel reported a loud, thunder-like noise.

The Irish National Seismic Network confirmed the quake occurred at a depth of approximately 5 km, and the epicentre was approximately 5 km east of Kerrykeel.

Donegal has had its share of noticeable earthquakes in recent times. Two major fault zones stretch across the county, causing tremors from time to time.

The most recent earthquake to occur near Kerrykeel was in August 2017 meaning 1.4 on the Richter scale, and the largest earthquake on the Fanad peninsula was M2.4 in January 2012.

A 2.5 magnitude earthquake was also felt near Glenveagh National Park in May of this year.
