A former British soldier will stand trial for two murders and five attempted murders on Bloody Sunday.

Former paratrooper Soldier F, who cannot be identified, is accused of murdering James Wray and William McKinney when members of the Parachute Regiment shot dead 13 civil rights protesters in Derry on January 30, 1972. He is also charged with five attempted murders on the same date.

A hearing in Derry today saw Soldier F sent for trial at a date to be fixed at Belfast Crown Court. He was released on continuing bail.

Tony Doherty, Chairperson of the Bloody Sunday Trust said, “It is over 13 years since the Saville Report was published. It remains a constant source of anger amongst the families that it has taken this long to get to the stage where one soldier is to be prosecuted. We welcome today’s decision and look forward to the beginning of the trial.”
