Midlands North West MEP Colm Markey is calling on Donegal people to prioritise local businesses and shop nearby this festive season.
According to Retail Ireland, households in Ireland are expected to spend an average of €1,019 more in December compared to other months. This projection, a 5% increase from last year’s estimates, suggests a total additional outlay by households of €1.1 billion during December 2023.
On this basis, the 15 counties of Midlands North West, including Donegal, could be in line to see over €400 million in retail spending over the Christmas period.
Minister Markey said Donegal consumers can keep their towns alive by shopping locally.
“While we are mindful of the cost-of-living pressures and the economic challenges many face, the spirit of Christmas can be a powerful force for positive change,” he said.
“By prioritising local businesses, we not only stimulate our local economies but also create a stronger sense of community and resilience. Shopping local not only sustains businesses but also helps to retain jobs within the community. My message is: Shop local for life, not just for Christmas!”
Minister Markey is encouraging people to explore the unique offerings of local retailers.
He concluded, “Irish towns and villages are buzzing with everything from charming boutiques to artisanal stores offering fresh local produce. During this year’s National Ploughing Championships, I visited the Local Enterprise Village and was blown away with what was on offer. Shopping online might seem like the easiest option but it does nothing to sustain our local communities. We have the power to keep our towns and villages vibrant this Christmas and in the months and years ahead.”
