Gardai in Donegal are advising homeowners to review their security after an increase in the number of reported residential burglaries particularly in the Inishowen Peninsula.

They say that since the beginning of November there has been a marked increase in reported burglaries in Donegal with a particular emphasis in the Inishowen Peninsula (Buncrana Garda District).

Sergeant Paul Wallace Divisional Crime Prevention Officer based at Letterkenny Garda Station said “Over the past few weeks since the beginning of November we have had SIXTEEN residential burglaries reported in the Muff, Burnfoot, Moville and Greencastle areas.

“Homes have been targeted with an increased number in recent nights but also outhouses, garages and sheds with valuable tools and garden equipment stolen.”

“These criminals are mobile and may strike in any area.”

Gardai say they want to alert residents in the Inishowen Peninsula but also across the county to take the following steps:

  1. Secure Garages and Out Buildings with proper locking mechanisms.
  2. Review perimeter lighting and upgrade where necessary remember lighting is an effective deterrent to the criminally minded.
  3. Check on older neighbours and persons residing alone… Remember Christmas can be a lonely time for some.
  4. Be vigilant for cars and vans movements in rural areas particularly during hours of darkness.
  5. Report activity that is arousing suspicion to your local 24/7 Garda District Headquarters Station.

Gardai also have been alerted to the theft of livestock in particular sheep in the Dunlewey and Fanad areas.

In an effort to thwart this activity farmers and residents in rural communities are particularly asked to become more vigilant for the movement of vans in particular which would be categorised as ‘strange’/ not from the area.

Registration numbers, colour and if possible make should be forwarded to local District Headquarters stations (see below) which are open on a 24/7 basis should be contacted so that this information can be considered for further dissemination amongst the community via the Community Text Alert Scheme which are in operation in conjunction with Community Alert in various areas throughout the County.

Your Local District Headquarters 24/7 Service Garda Stations are:

Letterkenny 91-67100 / Buncrana 93-20540 / Milford 91-53060 & Ballyshannon on 071-98-51102    Remember 999/112 in cases of emergency

Key Points:

  1. Dark Nights and Winter Weather are a key driver in increased burglaries.
  2. Ensure your house is secure, alarm is working and use it!
  3. Public are encourage to make reports as it gives Gardai best idea of emerging patterns in different areas.
  4. Remember the rear of your home is the most vulnerable approximately 50% of homes are burgled from rear windows or doors – Remember burglars like seclusion.
