Customs officers have seized a significant quantity of drugs in Co Limerick estimated to be worth at least €21 million.
Around 300 kg of cocaine was discovered yesterday on a bulk carrier ship which had docked in Foynes.
The drugs were concealed in a bale which had a buoyancy aid and a beacon attached, which indicates it may have been intended to be thrown overboard and collected by a ‘daughtership’.
The cargo ship is being detained pending a full search to see if there are more drugs onboard, which could take a number of days.
Back in July, almost €3 million worth of cocaine was dumped off the north Donegal coast. Two bales (main pic) weighing approximately 40 kilogrammes were washed up – one at Ballyhiernan Beach in Fanad and the other at Tramore in Dunfanaghy.
It is believed smugglers became suspicious they were being tracked and dumped the consignment overboard.
