Huge sadness at passing of leading Donegal businessman George Boal

There is widespread sadness following the passing of George Boal.

Mr Boal, one of the true characters of Letterkenny, will be remembered as a leading light in Donegal business for many years to come.

The founder of the Pinehill Industrial Estate in Letterkenny, Mr Boal was in his mid 80s.

He was named Letterkenny Business Person of the Year back in 2004 and will be remembered for helping many people throughout his career.

A farmer’s son, George served his time in James Johnston and Sons.

He then started a small roofing business and taught himself how to survive on his own business.

He married Rebecca Jane (Betty) Spratt in December, 1962 and the popular couple went on to have three children Drew, Richard and Gavin.

Family was everything to George and he was proud that Ricky and Gavin went on to manage the Pinehill Industrial Estate.

He was recognised by members of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District who renamed the nearby Mountain Top Roundabout as the “George Boal Roundabout” in February, 2021.

At the time of the renaming, George told local reporter Harry Walsh of the Donegal News that he would pursue the same route if he was to start out in business again.

And he offered some advice for any young person looking at a future career.

He said “My advice to any young person would be to serve your time and learn a trade – become a plumber, electrician or carpenter – because you’ll be as valuable as what a doctor is in years to come.

“There’s very few places any more where you can send a young person to learn a trade.

“I’ve no regrets. I’ve a very good woman who stuck by me in tough times. It was quite emotional news to get. It was very nice.

“At least when I’m dead someone will be able to tell the story about how the roundabout got its name,” George added.

May be rest in peace.

Funeral details will follow.
