Gardaí in Donegal have issued advice to anyone planning on celebrating the New Year, so they can have a safe and cheerful night out.
They’re advising the public to be streetwise when you’re out and about, to plan your night out, arrange transport home in advance, and also to let someone know what your plans are, and when you plan to be back.
Gardaí also are advising the public to avoid reasoning with someone who is drunk or aggressive on a night out, and to seek help if threatened – and also to avoid walking alone and in dark places.
They are appealing to victims of assault – particularly men – to come forward and seek Garda assistance.
“We urge victims of assault to always report the crime. It has been found that some victims of assaults, particularly men, are embarrassed to say they have been assaulted. We encourage anybody, and in particular younger men, to report all assaults to An Garda Síochána. Anyone who has been assaulted will be treated with sensitivity by An Garda Síochána and it will be fully investigated.”
!If you choose to use your fists you could not only wreck the life of your victim but you could also ruin your own future. You could lose your job, your ability to travel and even your freedom, not to mention the distress you would cause your family. Just remember that one punch can have a fatal outcome!”
