The Donegal Mountain Rescue Team has thanked members of the public who came to the aid of two walkers who recently got into difficulty on Errigal Mountain.

The incident happened on New year’s Day in what were described by rescue volunteers as “treacherous” conditions.

One of those injured suffered a lower leg injury while both walkers also suffered mild hypothermia.

A co-ordinated rescue response involving 25 volunteers and a number of agencies eventually brought the walkers to safety.

A spokesperson for DMRT also thanked the public for their help on the mission.

A spokesperson said “It has come to our attention that, before we were on scene, there were several members of the public who offered help and support to those who needed our assistance.

“We would like to thank them as, no doubt, without their offer of help to the person, the condition of the casualty may have been a lot worse.

“A gentle reminder to everyone to always have appropriate clothing and footwear for all weather types while venturing out to our mountains, no matter what it may look like out the window, as well as plenty of food, water and full phone signal, should you need to contact anyone.”
