Young woman dies in Letterkenny collision

A woman in her 20s has died following a fatal collision at Illistrin, Letterkenny.

The collision involving a car and a pedestrian occurred on the N56 this Friday evening.

The female pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries have been reported by gardaí.

The N56 road is currently closed between Letterkenny and Kilmacrennan with local diversions in place. Lengthy tailbacks have been reported on back roads in the area.

The road will remain closed until Saturday morning, when a technical examination of the scene will take place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N56 in the Illistrin area between 6:00pm and 7:15pm this evening are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

The total number of road deaths in 2024 has reached seven in the first five days of the year.
