Members of the public are being advised not to approach a baby seal that was washed up on a Fanad beach.

The mammal was spotted at Ballyhiernan Bay by a visitor out walking on Wednesday morning.

“I was walking Ballyhiernan Bay yesterday morning and saw a seal pup on the beach,” she posted on the Visit Fanad Donegal Facebook page.

“The pup started to head back into the water once it saw us approach it. I spoke to a member of Seal Rescue Ireland who said the pup would likely go into the water for a while and then head back to the beach to rest.”

The woman went back to the beach again on Wednesday night but the pup wasn’t there.

Again, she contacted Seal Rescue Ireland who told her just to flag the issue with local residents and, if they see the seal pup back on the beach, to give them a call.

Seal Rescue Ireland advised if people see the seal pup to not approach it or try herd it into the water. Just give them a call and explain the sighting and the general whereabouts of the pup.

They can be contacted on 0871955393 or via the following link: https://www.sealrescueireland.org/found-a-seal/
