Met Éireann warns of cold week ahead with hint of snow

While temperatures will rise slightly over the coming days, Met Éireann says they will dip again after the weekend and into next week.

It comes as some weather models suggest snow could fall in Ireland.

The national forecaster confirmed today that the weather will “stay very cold into next week”.

Its forecast for the week of Monday, January 15 to Sunday, January 21 reads: “During this week of the forecast period high pressure is expected to be situated to the northwest of the country and low pressure to the southwest. Overall air temperatures are expected to continue below average and possibly ranging as low as 3C below in some parts. Rainfall is also expected to remain below average across the country.”

It comes as some weather maps – which are subject to change this far out – tentatively show major snowfall in Ireland next week. The models suggest snow could arrive from next Wednesday, January 17.

However, weather experts have cautioned about the unpredictability of extended forecasts, which often chop and change due to the dynamic nature of the atmosphere.

Meanwhile, today will be mostly dry and cloudy across Ulster, with just occasional sunshine. Highest temperatures of 5 to 7 degrees in a light to moderate northeasterly wind.

Tonight will be cold, dry and generally cloudy. There will be frost in some areas as temperatures fall to between -1 and +2 degrees. Some mist and fog will form in near calm conditions.
