Community calls for footpath between Dunkineely and Bruckless

Fears for pedestrian safety have prompted further calls for a footpath on the busy N56 road which runs between Dunkineely and Bruckless.

Members of Dunkineely Community Ltd (DCL) say a footpath is necessary on this stretch of road, which is frequently used by walkers, many of whom are accessing essential services such as the school, post office, and churches.

DCL recently wrote to Bryan Cannon, Director of Service, Roads, and Transportation at Donegal County Council requesting an update on the potential for funding improvements to the N56.

Mr Cannon said that the section of road was included in the council’s requests for improvement works at a recent delegation to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) in early December.

He said that the council will be advised of allocations for 2024 from TII early in the New Year and that the council will be in a position to further advise its elected members and other stakeholders at that time.

A spokesperson for DCL welcomed the response and said “It should be noted, that even if funding is allocated, it may be months or even years before work commences. However, DCL will continue to campaign for urgent improvements.”
