A Donegal man who was critically injured in a road traffic accident in America just six weeks ago has returned to Ireland.
The family of Daniel Gallagher from Ardara feared the worst following the horrific crash in Florida on December 29th last.
He required 24 hour care by a team of doctors as they fought to save the life of the young Irishman.
The local community raised almost a staggering €120,000 to help with medical costs and to fly Daniel’s family to be by his side as he fought for his life.
Masses were also said for Daniel as the entire community around Ardara kept him in their prayers following the accident.
But now his sister Fiona has revealed how Daniel’s recovery has been nothing short of a “miracle” after he returned to Letterkenny University Hospital on Wednesday.
Daniel was cleared for discharge by his medical team at Orlando Regional Medical Centre before being flown into Derry Airport by Air Ambulance.
Accompanied by his brother Paul, he was admitted to Letterkenny University Hospital where he will recover from his numerous surgeries.
His family said they then hope to get him transferred to the National Rehabilitation Centre for further treatment and rehab on his injuries.
His sister Fiona said Daniel’s recovery is nothing short of a miracle and thanked all those who said prayers for her brother or helped in any way.
She said “We are so delighted to get him back on home soil, as we never imagined this would be possible six weeks post his accident.
“We thank you all so much for your prayers and kind thoughts. They definitely have made such a difference as Daniel is progressing every day and this is truly a miracle.
“He still has a very long hard road to go and at the moment the hospital has recommended that we limit visitors to immediate family only.
“We have been blown away by the kindness and generosity of everyone and we have taken great strength from it all.”
