Road safety issues in Carrigart ‘putting lives at risk’

Donegal County Council has been urged to act on the road safety concerns of the community in Carrigart.

Serious concerns were raised in 2022 over speeding motorists passing through the village.

At the time, the council installed numerous repeat speed limit signs and began research to analyse traffic and possible solutions.

However, two years on, and residents say the measures don’t go far enough, according to Sinn Féin representative for the Milford Electoral Area and local election candidate, Maria Doherty.

She said: “Just over two years ago, the residents of Carrigart village and surrounding area raised serious concerns at a public meeting held by Sinn Féin in relation to the volume and speed of traffic coming through the village and requested extra safety measures be put in place at the primary school in Umlagh, Scoil Eoin Bhaiste.

“A petition was gathered and presented to the council and despite numerous promises by council officials to engage with the community and to act on their concerns, there has been little, or no progress made.

“The council is always calling for and encouraging community engagement and then when this does happen, they appear to have chosen to ignore it.

“This is disrespectful to those involved in seeking solutions, but it is also putting lives at risk as there is ongoing concern at the speed of traffic coming through the village and at the school. It is time for the council to engage with the community, act on our concerns and to do it promptly.”
