A contractor has been appointed to build an outdoor dining space at Grianan Plaza in Letterkenny.

The ‘Eat Out’ project has been awarded to W.Doherty Construction, with works commencing outside An Grianán Theatre next week.

The project is scheduled to be completed over the proceeding 8-12 weeks.

This exciting project is funded by Failte Ireland’s ‘Local Authority Weather Proofing and Outdoor Dining Infrastructure Scheme’ with match-funding from Donegal County Council. The scheme design was enabled by the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF), a flagship initiative of Project Ireland 2040 which also enabled the preparation of the wider Leitirceannain 2040 Regeneration Strategy.

The project will provide a sheltered communal outdoor dining space through the construction of a raised platform area, canopy shelters and seating area. The space will also double up as a performance area as and when needed. When complete, this project will provide a flexible and unique public space within the existing public realm, facilitating year-round accessible outdoor dining space for the public.

In launching the project, Cllr Kevin Bradley, Mayor of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District said, “This is an exciting project in the heart of the town centre that will improve the forecourt of An Grianán and serve the needs of the many food businesses in the area. The project will upgrade the existing wider public space which is to be named after the late Councillor and former Mayor Dessie Larkin. The ‘Eat Out’ project within the public space will provide lots of opportunities for eating, public art, meeting & gathering”. He added… “The space will increase capacity for outdoor dining and support our hospitality and tourism sector, enabling civic and community gatherings, as well as cultural and artistic expression”. He continued… “I am delighted to announce that these works will commence next week”.

Liam Ward, Director of Community Development & Planning Services said “Whilst this project forms part of Failte Ireland’s ‘Local Authority Weather Proofing & Outdoor Dining Infrastructure Scheme’ rollout, it also complements our wider Cultural Corridor project, one of a number of regeneration proposals under the Letterkenny 2040 programme, which together seek to deliver a series of higher quality public spaces for people living, working and visiting Letterkenny.

He added “…the space will provide a more accessible and attractive public realm, giving people a casual communal space to stop, sit, eat, meet and gather, all of which form part of a series of regeneration proposals for the town”.
