Arrows sought to clear confusion at Polestar roundabout approach

New road markings are being sought for the Four Lane road approaching Letterkenny’s Polestar Roundabout amid confusion over lanes.

The Four Lane is the only approach to the roundabout where there are currently no arrow markings. Road numbers are painted on the two lanes, which expand to three lanes approaching the traffic lights.

Local councillor Donal Coyle said the situation creates a real risk of collisions, particularly for motorists who end up in the wrong lane.

Cllr Coyle called on Donegal County Council to request Transport Infrastructure Ireland to add more directional markings.

“All I’m asking for is three arrows to be painted before where the three lanes are. You have it on the Neil T Blaney, the one going straight for the town and one to the right for the Ramelton road,” Cllr Coyle told today’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

“Some people are going into the lane going into town and then cutting across and I’ve seen it myself, that is a situation where an accident could occur.”

Cllr Coyle added that traffic is moving well at the newly signalised roundabout but the lack of arrows is causing cars to slow down instead of driving on because they are not sure which lane they should be in.

Cllr Coyle was told by the council that the Letterkenny Roads department will liaise with the TII regarding the issue. A spokesperson confirmed that the approach signage and markings are in line with current requirements. The Four Lane project was completed in December and changes to the Polestar will be subject to ongoing review and monitoring to ensure the safe and effective operation.
