Plans have been submitted to Donegal County Council for a new turkey rearing farm on the outskirts of Letterkenny.

David Black is seeking permission for the proposed development at Ardahee, Newmills.

The plans include two huge sheds with a combined area of 3,344 square metres (36,000 sq ft).

According to documents lodged with the application, the structures will be used for the rearing of turkeys with a growth cycle of 22 weeks. It also states that waste generated from the enterprise can be spread on the landholding.

“These sheds are fully automatic and only need to be inspected once or twice daily,” the application stated.

Pest control will be put in place by an external company and any birds that die will be put in a sealed container and collected by a registered disposal firm.

Council planners are to make a decision on the application by April 2.
