A gifted and generous St Johnston man has again raised thousands of euro for charity through his annual St Brigid’s Cross making venture.

Joe Bovaird, from Trentagh, is well known throughout Donegal and beyond for his charity fundraising by carrying on the ancient cross making tradition.

Joe’s crosses have gone global over the years, reaching a lot of homes in Scotland, USA and Canada as well as many corners of Ireland.

He started making them 56 years ago, giving the crosses to family and friends until someone suggested that he raise money from them and donate it to charity, which he has been doing ever since.

This year, Joe raised a cool €3,530 for Mary’s Meals, meaning 160 school children will be fed for a full year. He presented a cheque to Fr. Eamonn Kelly, Chair of the charity, on Monday.

Mary’s Meals has been working with a trusted partner in Africa for many years and together are ready to provide assistance to those who need it most as this situation continues to unfold.

Joe would like to thank everyone who donated money, adding he truly appreciates their kindness.
