Malin Head Coast Guard members helped coordinate a major rescue today after a fisherman became seriously ill on a Norwegian vessel off the west of Ireland.
The operation unfolded approximately 160 miles west of Erris Head, Mayo.
Dublin-based Coast Guard Helicopter R116 was immediately tasked, while Shannon-based R115 provided crucial backup, shadowing R116 throughout.
At 12:50 pm, the crew of R116 successfully winched the individual onboard the helicopter, ensuring their swift transport to University Hospital Galway.
Malin Head’s Rescue Coordination Centre coordinated the medical evacuation alongside colleagues from the UK Coastguard and the Norwegian Coast Guard.
“It was a busy morning here at MRSC Malin Head,” said a spokesperson in Malin Head.
“We wish the fisherman well.”
