Donegal has been allocated €29.8 million for Donegal’s National Roads and Greenways in 2024.

The funding was announced today as part of a total of over €440 million allocated to National Roads and Greenways nationwide.

The allocations will be made to local authorities across the country through Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

AS well as the road allocation, a total of €3,845,000 has been allocated for the county’s various greenway plans.

Welcoming the allocation, Donegal minister, Charlie McConalogue, said: “The substantial new funding allocated today is hugely important for National Roads and Greenways here in Donegal. The funding is part of the government’s investment in improving our national roads and greenways infrastructure.

“It will help ensure that our roads are safe, reliable and accessible for everyone who uses them. I am pleased that Donegal has received the third highest allocation nationally.”

“A total of€22.8 million has been allocated for roads, €3,845,000 is to be invested in greenways, while €2,020,000 been committed to progressing with continuing preparation, design and planning works on the Ten-T Donegal Projects.

“A top priority of Fianna Fáil in Government is continuing to invest in the maintenance and improvement of our road network to make it as safe as possible while improving regional connectivity and supporting regional economic development,” Minister McConalogue added.

The Minister added that continued investment in Greenways is welcome, as they protect important habitats and provide corridors for people and wildlife.

They help improve air and water quality and provide enjoyable and safe options for transportation, which reduces air pollution, so it is important they continue to receive appropriate investment, he said.

“Today’s announcement comes a week after Donegal was allocated €36.2 million for its regional and local roads, and follows on from the confirmation on Tuesday that €600 million was allocated to the A5 Derry to Aughnacloy Road as well a agreement to progress the Donegal Ten T Road Projects. This is all positive news for Donegal,” Minister McConalogue said.
