Two Letterkenny brothers are embracing university life on an identical education journey.

Daniel and Luke Doherty are both first years of the Early Childhood Care, Health, and Education degree at ATU Donegal.

The former St Eunan’s College pupils both chose to study at the Letterkenny campus to be closer to home and to keep up with their many hobbies.

For Luke, it’s a step towards his goal of being a primary school teacher.

He said: “I had my pathway of what I wanted to do, knowing I would not get straight into a primary school teaching course, but knowing I want to do something like primary school teaching because I enjoy coaching football as a hobby.”

For Daniel, ATU enabled him to immerse himself in a supportive learning environment as he strives towards his goal. He recommends that students avail of all the support services offered at ATU.

One such centre is The Curve Learning Support Unit, where students get additional support to ensure they reach their potential.

Daniel said: “The Curve is a massive help for any student that has a learning disability. They are always there to help and will give you the best chance to do well in any exams or assignments you have.”

The twins say it’s also well worth getting to know the library for zero-distraction study.

The Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Donegal Open Day takes place this weekend on Saturday, 2nd of March on the Letterkenny campus. From 10am – 1pm ATU Donegal invite you to explore your university options for 2024.

Daniel says there are many benefits to visiting the campus: “The Open Day gives you a look into the facilities ATU has to offer, an insight to what course your interested in is like and where it can lead you in future career pathways. It could also potentially help you make friends with people who are going to be in the same course as you if you choose to study at ATU Donegal.”

As their dreams of being educators take shape, the Dohertys say there has been plenty of ‘good craic’ in their first year of their degree. They say the practical modules provide the perfect balance of studies and fun.
“Pick a course you know you will enjoy. More than likely if you pick a course that you’ll enjoy you’ll meet people within the course with the same interests as you,” Daniel advises prospective students.

Luke’s advice is: “Enjoy your college experience but keep the head down and work hard at the same time.”

Daniel adds: “If you decide to go to university, wherever it may be, enjoy it. The time moves in quicker than you’d expect. And get to know everyone in your course it’s a great chance to meet new friends.”

Explore your future at ATU Donegal’s Open Day this Saturday 2nd March from 10am – 1pm.

If you are a Leaving Certificate student, the parent of a Leaving Certificate student, or considering returning to education or upskilling in 2024, the ATU Donegal Open Day is for you.

Come along and find out about all programme offerings, meet with academic staff and enjoy a guided campus tour.

A range of talks will be delivered on the day, from advice on choosing the right career path/programme for you to financing your third level journey.

So if you’re a Leaving Cert student, or someone who is considering making a return to education or upskilling in your career in 2024, this day is for you!
