Sinn Féin Councillor Albert Doherty has been chosen to run for a county council seat again this June.

The party is also planning to pick a second candidate for the North Inishowen municipal district.

Cllr Doherty, a former school teacher and principal, was re-elected to Donegal County Council in the May 2019 local elections on the third count with 1,151 votes. He served as Cathaoirleach of the Inishowen Municipal District in 2020.

Speaking on his selection last night, Cllr Doherty said: “It has been an honour and privilege to represent and work for the people of the peninsula and county.

“I look forward to the election campaign ahead, meeting, listening and working for and with the Inishowen electorate.”

Cllr Doherty has been in local politics for more than two decades, first elected in 1999 as a member of Independent Fianna Fáil. He missed out on a seat in the 2004 elections before joining Sinn Féin and retaking his seat in 2014.
