Long-standing Buncrana councillor Rena Donaghey has confirmed that she will not be seeking re-election this June.

Cllr Donaghey has served the people of Inishowen and Donegal for almost 30 years, having been first elected to the local authority in 1999.

The Fianna Fáil councillor was elected Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council in 2020, becoming the third woman in the position and the first female Fianna Fáil member to fill the role in Donegal.

Paying tribute to Cllr Donaghey today, Sinn Féin Cllr Jack Murray said: “Though of different political persuasions, we built a very strong working relationship over the last 13 years and always supported each other on areas of common ground or on those affecting Buncrana and South Inishowen.

“Knowing Rena, this will be bittersweet. She’ll miss political life but she will be relishing the extra time with her grand kids.”
