3,000 speeding detections in Donegal last year as road policing stats revealed

More than 3,000 speeding detections were made across Co Donegal last year.

Of these, 1,089 were detected by Gardai while a further 2,084 were detected by the Go Safe speed vans.

The figures were given to today’s meeting of the Joint Policing Committee by newly-appointed Donegal Chief Superintendent Goretti Sheridan.

A large raft of stats was given to JPC members covering from January to December, 2023.

The total number of Garda checkpoints in the year was 1,203.

Those caught not wearing a seatbelt was 145, the number caught on their mobile phone was 362 while those caught drug driving was 154.

The number caught driving whilst intoxicated was 251 with 18 of those caught during the Christmas Campaign.

The number of motorists caught dangerous driving was 342 while a total of 5,843 breath tests was carried out at Mandatory Intoxicant Test with 29 of these proving positive.

There were nine fatal collisions with a total of 56 serious injury collisions.

Material damage collisions amounted to a total of 1,485 while there were a total of 157 non serious collisions.
