World’s biggest rodent arrives at Donegal animal centre

The world’s largest rodent has arrived at the Errigal View Pet Zoo.

Two capybaras arrived at the zoo which is located at An Cuairt Hotel in Meenderrygamph, Gaoth Dobhair yesterday.

The unusual animals are set to be a huge hit with visitors to the centre which is very popular already.

The capybara is a giant cavy rodent native to South America and is the largest living rodent.

Its close relatives include guinea pigs and rock cavies.

It is a highly social species and can be found in groups as large as 100 individuals, but usually live in groups of 10–20 individuals.

It can weigh up to a whopping 146 pounds.

A spokesperson for Errigal View Pet Zoo said their two new arrivals are settling in well to their new forever home.

The zoo reopens this Saturday from 10.30 to 5pm.
