Did ‘miraculous medals’ help swing the no vote in Donegal?

A miraculous turn out of a different kind was evident at the Donegal count in the Aura Leisure Centre yesterday.

The turn-out for the referendum may have been disappointing across the country.

But when the ballot boxes were tipped out at the Letterkenny venue at 9am yesterday morning, it was soon evident that yes campaigners didn’t have a prayer.

But perhaps the yes campaign didn’t have the power of the ever dependable miraculous medal on their side.

Several of the miraculous medals turned up at various ballot boxes across the county.

The medals, wrapped in sealed bags, also contained Novena Prayers.

Counting staff hoping to get home early to watch the Ireland vs England rugby game were also hoping the medals might bring them a little hope.

But it wasn’t to be as Returning Officer Geraldine O’Connor finally read out the last results at 8.19pm.

Andy Farrell’s players perhaps could have done with a few tucked into the socks.
