A significant milestone has been reached in Donegal with the launch of ‘Stars in the Saddle’ Special Olympics club.

The club is dedicated to providing equestrian opportunities for individuals across the county with intellectual disabilities. Led by Lisa Moore of Glenleary Riding School in Ramelton, this initiative aims to empower and enrich the lives of athletes through the transformative power of horse riding.

“We are thrilled to introduce ‘Stars in the Saddle’ and offer a supportive environment where athletes can pursue their passion for horse riding,” Ms Moore said.

“Through this initiative, we aim to foster a sense of belonging and empowerment within the Special Olympics community.”

Glenleary Riding School, in collaboration with Equi-Me Therapeutic Riding, already offers therapeutic riding programmes. By combining their efforts, they have created a platform where individuals of all abilities can thrive, develop essential life skills, and experience the joy of horseback riding.

Jennie Peoples, Founder of Equi-Me Therapeutic Riding, echoed these sentiments, emphasising the holistic benefits of equine-assisted activities.

“At Equi-Me, we recognise the profound impact that interactions with horses can have on individuals and are honoured to be involved in Stars in the Saddle,” she said.

“Stars in the Saddle will provide a diverse range of equestrian activities, including riding lessons, horse care workshops, and participation in Special Olympics competitions.”

To launch this exciting initiative, Glenleary Riding School will host an Open Day on Sunday, March 24th, from 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the team, learn more about the Special Olympics Stars in the Saddle Club, witness demo rides, try horse riding, and explore membership options. Additionally, Malin Stables will host an Open Day on Monday, March 25th, from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm, providing another chance for the community to engage with this new programme.
