Fifteen drink/drug driving arrests in Donegal last week

Gardaí in Donegal have issued a Bank Holiday road safety appeal after another series of road offences detected across the county.

Over the past week alone there have been five drink-driving related arrests and ten drug-driving related arrests in Donegal.

Gardaí will be out in force over St Patrick’s weekend and are reminding motorists to remember that they may still be over the limit in the morning after celebrating.

“The figures in relation to drug driving detections in particular are very concerning at present,” said Garda Claire Rafferty.

In a community appeal, Garda Rafferty said: “Our priority is to keep people safe and to prevent death and injury on our roads.

“We appeal to those of you who will be socialising and consuming alcohol to leave your car at home or to designate a driver and also to remember that you may still be over the limit the morning after.

“We urge people not to drive while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and please do not get into a car as a passenger with a driver whom you suspect may be under the influence.”

The advice to follow daily is: “Slow down, wear your seatbelt and do not use/hold a mobile phone while driving. We simply ask all road users to play their part in the bid to save lives on the roads by always making responsible decisions.”
