Yellow box planned for Letterkenny Four Lane crossing point

Motorists in Letterkenny will soon see a new yellow box appear on the Four Lane road to improve traffic flow at the Cullion Road junction.

Concerns were raised with Donegal County Council earlier this week about delays for drivers accessing the turn-off when leaving the town.

Two issues have been raised recently. In January, it emerged that the traffic light sensor is positioned at a distance from the line. Motorists have reportedly sat at a red light for extended periods, unaware they need to move forward to trigger the sensor.

This week, Councillor Gerry McMonagle also highlighted that traffic backing up on the inbound lanes blocks access for vehicles turning onto the Cullion Road.

Cllr McMonagle asked that a Yellow Box be put in place on the road into town on the Four Lane at the Cullion crossing point.

He also called for signs to be erected to instruct motorists using this signalled junction that they need to move closer to the junction ‘for the lights to work properly’.

The query was raised with the Letterkenny Roads Department on Tuesday, and the response from the council was that the National Road Design Office have reviewed the junction and proposed the following:

  • Slow-moving vehicles during peak traffic appears to affect the performance of the junction. To improve performance, a yellow box will be placed on the inbound carriageways at the Cullion Road.
  • While recent adjustment to the signalisation facility improved activation, some issues remain. Donegal County Council will progress further refinement with the traffic control specialists.
