Calls for action after overcrowded parking scenes at Errigal

Donegal County Council are being asked to install basic facilities at Errigal mountain after chaotic parking scenes at the foot of the mountain were seen this Bank Holiday Weekend.

In a video shared on social media yesterday, cars can be seen parked along the road for some distance in the area where the footpath up the mountain begins.

Roarty’s Shop in Dunlewey shared the footage, to make a plea to Donegal County Council regarding the dire state of the parking and toilet facilities at Mount Errigal.

“It’s time for the Donegal County Council to take some responsibility for parking or lack of parking spaces at Errigal & also look at providing toilets,” Roarty’s posted.

“A small shop like ours simply cannot be left to provide toilets for that amount of people & it’s not even peak season yet!”

The store has become an popular stop for tourists and Errigal mountaineers, due to the lack of any toilet facilities at one of Donegal’s most popular tourist attractions.

Even in March on the St Patrick’s Day weekend, there has been a massive volume of tourist traffic in the area that is only set to increase once some better weather and the Summer season come around.

Locals, who have to use the road at the entrance to the climb on a daily basis, are increasingly concerned about the prospect of an accident due to the oversaturation of cars parked on either side on an already somewhat narrow road.

“This is not good enough! It’s an accident waiting to happen then the poor person driving gets the blame,” one commenter on social media noted.

Another noted regarding the facilities, “as for Roarty’s shop and toilets, manys a time (the toilets there) were used on a day out, and for this thank you. DCC need to have toilets in all beauty spots, but talking about this would take up a meeting or two!”
